It's Hard to Fix What You Can't See

Working in roofing around Madison, I've seen how slow the insurance claim process can get once a storm rolls through. It starts simple enough. A homeowner calls the office wondering if their roof might have hail damage. I head out to take a look and let them know if it's worth filing a claim. If it is, we help get the adjuster scheduled and start the process.

That's when things tend to slow down. The adjuster comes out, does their inspection, and says they'll send the Statement of Loss soon. It usually takes a week or two before the homeowner receives it, and even longer before I see it. By that point, we've already lost time, and the claim still has a long way to go.

The waiting isn't anyone's fault. Everyone is working, from the homeowner to the adjuster to the office and crew, but nobody really knows which parts of the process cause the biggest slowdowns or what to do to make them faster. The timing just slips between people.

Then come the supplements, where we go back and forth to adjust missing items or details. That can take days or weeks. On paper it looks like progress, but in real time, it feels like everything is moving through mud.

I've seen plenty of claims like that. The homeowner ends up happy, the work gets done, but it's clear the whole process could be smoother. Not because people aren't trying, but because we don't have visibility into where time is actually being lost.

That's what I've learned watching these claims play out. When you finally see what's slowing things down, that's when things start to change.
